Abstract

Melampsora larici-populina, an internationally known damaging foliar rust of poplars, has been dealt with in detail with regard to its current status in the country as an immigrant pathogen of concern, taxonomy, damage and control in the nursery. Foliar application of Bayleton (0.08%) has been found to be most effective in controlling the rust infection.

Abstract

Extensive laboratory tests have been conducted under six series of experiments to study the effects of two species of varying density from strength groups, thickness of constituent members, inclination of loading to the direction of grain of timber and face veneer orientation of plywood, preboring plywood, etc. Analysis of results done at different levels of derivations have revealed a definite trend in applications as to the preference of a particular plywood thickness, timber thickness and strength loss on preboring plywood but no generalized conclusion have been drawn. Bearing strength of wire nails presented for different types of joints may be safely used as designfunctions in plywood-to-wood composite structures.

Abstract

In estimating the growing stock of Eucalyptus in an Agro-forestry system, the problem of optimum sample size, which should provide an accurate estimate of the population characteristic is often felt. The size to be chosen depends upon the variability in the population characteristic and the tolerable margin of error which could be permitted between the estimate of the population characteristic as provided by the sample estimate and the true population value. It has been empirically seen that although variability is not uniform for a given population characteristic from place to place and for varying ages, the coefficient of variation remains fairly stable for populations of differing locations and ages. This fact helps, through statistical theory. in obtaining Ihe optimum sample size. In the present study, the sample size to be taken for volume estimation, at different levels of margin of error, has been determined in respect of five Eucalyptus plantations in Haryana based on the population coefficient of variation.
